Variations on Paganini: arr. McCashin

  1. Review characteristics of piece (3:00)

    1. Only working with measures 61-81

    2. Heavy waltz

    3. Picture a drunk man swinging on a streetlight outside a bar

    4. Messy, lazy, bolstering, with big vibrato

    5. Heavy downbeat, last two quarter notes should be consequently lighter, but not airy.

    6. What are other words to describe this section?

  2. Play through measures 61-81 at mm=66 (4:00)

    1. Abby play top notes, Jordan play bottom

  3. Notes: (6:30)

    1. Vibrato should be big on the downbeat. What you think is too much is actually not—promise! Hannah & Abby play at measure 65

    2. Gliisandos should be dramatic and LOOOOONG. Have Abby play and demonstrate this.

    3. 16th notes in 1st violin and viola part should be super short—just a flick of the wrist. Make them as late as possible. Jordan play m. 77, Abby play m. 65.

  4. Play through heavy waltz section again, this time keeping the previously mentioned things in mind. (8:00)

    1. Fix any smaller problems; are dynamics where they need to be?
